Butternut Farm / Wayfinders
Amherst, MA
Recognizing the City of Amherst’s commitment to develop affordable housing options for its residents, Way Finders (formerly HAPHousing) set out with plans to transform a former farmhouse, conveniently situated on the Pioneer Valley Transit Authority bus route. The development was immediately met with strong community opposition – locals were in favor of affordable housing but “not in their neighborhood.” For nearly a decade, Way Finders fought legal controversy and resistance. When Western Builders was given the opportunity to be the builder on the project, we were committed to giving Way Finders everything they worked so long and hard for.
Built on a foundation of perseverance, Western Builders renovated the old farmhouse and constructed three additional multi-family buildings for a total of 24 housing units. Featuring quaint New England charm, Butternut Farm now blends seamlessly into the rolling foothills of Amherst. With much housing demand in the area, all of Butternut Farm’s units were quickly fully occupied. Western Builders is proud to have been part of this affordable housing project as it aligns with our mission to improve and enhance communities.
