College of Nursing – Simulation Lab / UMass
springfield, MA
Giving nursing students a life-like simulation lab in which to hone their skills helps further distinguish the quality of the accelerated Bachelor program at UMass Amherst College of Nursing.
Completed in early 2018 in three phases while fully occupied, the project included the renovation of a portion of offices and rarely used rooms into the new Nurse Lab and adjacent telehealth consultation suite. Each lab room is complete with faux medical gas head units at each patient bed, patient monitors, privacy screens, and full A/V capabilities. The simulation lab allows students to now practice healthcare on mannequin patients in a realistic hospital setting.
The six-month project went smoothly, even while the offices were occupied during renovation. The greatest challenge was procuring the headwall units from an international manufacturer without regional representation. Despite the challenge, the project was completed on time and on budget.
