Linwood Mill apartments
Whitinsville, MA
Overlooking the picturesque Linwood Pond and Mumford River in Whitinsville, Massachusetts, sits the beautifully renovated Linwood Mill Apartments senior-living community. Western Builders was commissioned to convert these apartments from what was originally the Linwood Cotton Mill, a historic landmark originally built in 1866.
The renovation project consisted of reconstructing one five-story building and one three-story building into a community of studio, one- and two bedroom apartments for the 55+ adult population. While given a twelve month schedule, Western Builders successfully completed this project in just nine months, and all within budget.
The adaptive reuse of the former 19th century building now features 75 apartments and amenities including a community kitchen, laundry facilities, and lounge/library that was converted from the former engine room. In addition, the ground floor of the three-story building houses 20,000 square feet of retail and commercial space. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the buildings were transformed while also retaining much of their original architectural beauty with carefully restored Victorian mansard roofs, trim, high ceilings, exposed brick, timber beams and decking, and historic bell tower.
This project continued Western Builders’ advocacy for adaptive reuse and preservation of the historic built environment and the rejuvenation of formerly abandoned landmarks.
