Lyons Center for Health and natural sciences
Chicopee, MA
The Lyons Center for Natural and Health Sciences on the campus of Elms College is designed to provide modern facilities to prepare students for careers in nursing, science, mathematics, and technology. Ground breaking began in June 2012 and the center was formally opened with a dedication ceremony in November 2013.
Western was selected to build the five-story, 22,000 sq ft steel-framed, brick facility that features state-of-the-art lecture halls, computer information technology laboratories, biology and chemistry laboratories, and a nursing skills and simulation laboratory that provides an innovate environment simulating clinical and hospital settings. Close coordination was required to integrate all MEPs necessary for the labs. In addition, the new building connects to one of the college’s existing structures which remained fully occupied throughout construction, requiring pedestrian traffic redirection along with dust and noise control.
With the completion of the new center, Elms College plans to expand its programs and increase enrollment in the natural and health sciences by up to 40 percent within five years.
